Q: What made you choose to join your current employer?
It was the only job offer I got, seriously, and it was either that or going to work in the family business in chip board. It sounded interesting as well; I had always had an interest in the stage and theatre and I thought costume jewellery was for costumes. I was 19 - what did I know?
Q: What is the basic function/purpose of your current role?
I design five collections a year and travel regularly to the factory in Thailand and to meet clients in the USA, Japan (we actually meet in Milan mostly) and Europe.
Q: How relevant were your qualifications to you getting the job?
My A levels had absolutely no specific relevance at all; however, costume jewellery is a strange business where you need to know a little of just about everything, from physics to chemistry to business etc. I tend to use just about everything but you do not necessarily need a degree in anything - which is lucky for me as I don't have one.
Q: Describe some of the key tasks involved in performing your current role and the frequency with which you have to perform them.
The morning is spent answering emails, reviewing pictures of new models that have been made and general admin and book keeping. Then in the afternoon I get down to designing.
Q: What’s the first thing you do when you arrive at work each day?
Pick up my guitar and terrorise the neighbours. I should explain that I work from home and my guitars are in my office.
Q: How big is the team in which you work?
Huge. It's me and my trusty assistant!
Q: Describe how your job interacts with the rest of your team.
We share making the tea and generally get on and enjoy what we do.
Q: How would you describe the working culture of your current employer?
I try to be relaxed but there are real deadlines with the collections which cannot be moved so the atmosphere is enjoyable but can be deadly serious when needed.
Q: What career avenues do you hope to be able to pursue in the next: two years, five years & ten years?
I'm very happy doing what I do; it's taken 30 years to get here so long may it continue.
Q: What do you like most about your current role and why?
It's creative and I get to do what I like doing without the bad bits of running a factory with 100+ people, which would be nightmare right now.
Q: What did you/do you find hardest about your current role?
Having to be creative on demand.
Q: How close do you think that the general public’s view of your employer is to the reality?
If only they knew.
Q: Would you recommend your employer to a friend and if so, why?
Most definitely he's a great guy and good looking too.
